Welcome to Bushy Point Fernbirds Homestay Bed and Breakfast. A glimpse of New Zealand the way it used to be.

We are proud to be included as a Ramsar wetland of international importance site.

Our homestay is located on an eco-friendly, privately owned, managed and protected forest & wetland reserve on the edge of the New River Estuary, Invercargill, Southland. We have constantly worked on improving this reserve as a bird habitat in the 20 years we have been here.

Pest animal control has had a measured result of a 400% increase in fernbird numbers over 2 years. Tuis and bellbirds provide a dawn chorus unheard in most of New Zealand. Watch birds from the doorstep.

We are only 10 minutes drive from Invercargill, 5 minutes to airport, 25 minutes to Bluff port. Our homestay is ideal for stopping over before or after Stewart Island, Catlins or Fiordland.

Take a short drive or a courtesy coach to nearby restaurants or use our kitchen to cook your evening meal.

Tariff: NZ$120 couple, NZ$100 single. Breakfast and guided walk included.

From October 2010 NZ135 couple NZ115 single.

Staying at our relaxing homestay increases your opportunities of seeing fernbirds. If your itinerary does not allow you to stay, please contact us to arrange a guided walk on our property. Early morning or evening are best. A small charge applies which includes a cuppa in our home.

This is private property - no access is allowed without our permission.

Cell phone reception is patchy around Otatara, remember this when in the area.

Ian and Jenny Gamble
